Location
The Oaxaca Zócalo, or Main Square, is located in the very heart of the city. It not only represents the geographic centre, but has been the cultural soul of the city right from when it was constructed by the Zapotecs. To the northwest the Zócalo leads onto another important square, the Alameda de León. Northwards is marked by the Cathedral and Calle de Independencia which cuts right through the city centre.
In a nutshell
If you want to experience the true vibe of Oaxaca City, the Zócalo is undoubtedly the place to do it. The beautiful arcaded plaza is the best place to soak up a bit of daily Oaxaqueñan life and watch the comings and goings as everyone goes about their business. In addition to sipping some coffee or mezcal in one of the many cafés (see Oaxaca Drinks for more information) there are plenty of sights to see and things to do at the Oaxaca Zócalo.
